Welcome to the department of surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center of Greater Miami.
The surgical department of Mount Sinai Medical Center is endorsing a growth and development phase which is creating a 21st century department oriented towards minimally invasive surgery.
Our mission is to provide the highest level of clinical surgical care, develop and innovate new techniques, provide education to our future surgeons and continuing medical education to surgeons in the community.
Clinical Excellence
Nearly 13,000 surgical procedures are performed annually; half of them are accomplished in the outpatient setting. Many of our reputable surgeons are national and international leaders in their respective fields.
Innovation and Development
Whether it is robotic surgery, NOTES (Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery), new joint replacement techniques, or neurosurgical and spine innovations, our surgeons are always finding new ways to perform surgery with the least trauma possible - resulting in less scars and less pain. Our areas of development include biomaterials, anastomotic devices, stent-grafts and minimally invasive thyroid and parathyroid surgery. In addition, we have just created a new research fellowship in minimally invasive surgery. New surgical procedures offering an effective cure of type-2 diabetes are also available under a clinical research protocol (pending IRB full approval).
Education
Residency program in general surgery had a lot of attention this year with a major increase in applications from national and international applicants.
We also have a Visiting Observer Program which seeks to provide an observational experience in new concepts of minimally invasive surgery. A new link for live surgical demonstrations was established this spring which sent live surgery to national and international conferences in China and India, with similar uplinks set for Europe.
Finally, an operational agreement with Florida International University will permit an increase of clinical faculty on the Mount Sinai campus and we will be receiving medical students for rotation in various disciplines of surgery.
At Mount Sinai Medical Center, our goal is to be one of the leading surgical programs in the country.
