Interventional
Cardiology
Mount Sinai’s commitment
to cutting-edge medicine and therapies has made the hospital a leader in
treating cardiovascular problems through minimally invasive, interventional
techniques. With the use of catheters and other advanced tools, specialists can
treat a number of problems – such as coronary artery disease – without the need
for major surgery. Examples of interventional treatments include:
- Coronary angiography -
an X-ray that uses dye injected into the coronary arteries so that blood
circulation can be studied
- Coronary angioplasty -
a procedure to open or widen blocked coronary arteries and improve blood flow
to the heart
- Intravascular
ultrasound - the administration of ultrasound within a vessel to reduce an
obstruction or narrowing
- Non-coronary
angioplasties
- Pacemaker - a device
implanted inside the body to regulate heartbeat
- Permanent cardioverter
defibrillator - a device implanted to monitor rapid heart rhythm and deliver
electronic shocks to restore normal heartbeat
