Interventional Radiology
A whole
new field of radiology has emerged and is providing new solutions to common
cardiac conditions. Interventional radiology involves the delivery of
targeted treatments using advanced imaging for guidance. Mount Sinai’s
interventional radiologists are skilled in applying the latest technology. The
powerful tools they use to see inside our bodies, such as X-rays, CT and MRI
scans, are now being combined with state-of-the-art lasers, angioplasty and
other devices to perform image-guided minimally invasive surgeries to treat
everything from blocked blood vessels and blood clots to performing biopsies.
Cool
Laser Revascularization, a new minimally invasive laser treatment that vaporizes
plaque, blood clots and calcium that blocks arteries in the legs, is one of the
newest treatment options available at Mount Sinai. It is useful for
patients with Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) and Critical Limb Ischemia
(CLI).
CryoPlasty therapy is another new treatment for PAD. The surgeon
inserts a small balloon filled with liquid nitrous oxide into the affected
vessel. As the balloon expands and opens the blockage, it cools the
plaque.
In
addition, Mount Sinai was one of the first hospitals in the country to offer
carotid stenting. This procedure addresses a narrowing of the carotid
artery, which supplies the brain with oxygen-rich blood. A filter is
introduced into the artery to prevent plaque particles from going to the
brain.
