Cardiac Rehabilitation

Providing comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation services to patients is another reason why Mount Sinai a leader in the field of cardiac care. We are one of the few hospitals in South Florida with such a program. With 20 years of experience, we specialize in restoring the health of cardiac patients, including those who are recovering from open heart surgery, valve repairs or replacements, cardiac catheterization, PTCA (Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty or ‘stents’) and heart transplant or heart/lung transplants. In Phase II and Phase III rehabilitation, our cardiac rehabilitation team uses advanced evaluation and intervention techniques to carefully determine each person’s abilities. Our therapists then work closely with cardiology specialists to guide patients through a gentle progression of aerobic activity and general self-care skills, while continually monitoring vital signs.  You can learn more about our rehabilitation programs by visiting our ortho/rehab section.

Cardiac Rehabilitation is a medically supervised program to safely restore physical fitness and function for people who, within the last year, have had:

  • A Heart Attack
  • Coronary bypass surgery
  • Chest Pain
  • Cardiac valve repair/replacement
  • Angioplasty or coronary stent
  • Heart or heart-lung transplant, or
  • Other forms of cardiovascular disease.

The program’s goal is to help you regain confidence in exercising your heart through a structured and supervised program while assisting you to develop healthy lifestyle habits that reduce the risk of further complications from heart disease.

The key components to your security and independence with Mount Sinai Medical Center’s (MSMC) Cardiac Rehabilitation program include:

  • Medically supervised exercise. Our Cardiac Rehabilitation program is developed by our accredited rehabilitation program and prescribed by your cardiologist. Your Cardiac Rehabilitation Specialist will make an assessment and work as your partner to design a plan of care using aerobic exercise, strength training and other functional activities.
  • Tailored just for you. Your exercise program is developed just for you and your needs. During your workout, your cardiovascular response is monitored by telemetry equipment and continuously supervised by our specialty-trained cardiac staff.
  • Confidence about returning back to health. We help you to feel confident that your exercise is safe and that your exercise plan will be increased progressively to build and regain your strength and endurance.
  • Communication with your physician. As a key component of your overall treatment plan, your progress is reported to your physician from the very beginning through to the end of your rehabilitative program.
  • Education on modifying risk factors. Your wellness includes not only physical fitness, but also lifestyle and healthy eating habits. Your specialist will provide you with the education and assistance to restore you to the best of health.
  • Resources to assist with your overall health and well-being. Having a heart attack or heart condition can be stressful. Your Cardiac Rehabilitation Specialist can assist you with psychosocial assistance, support for coping with cardiovascular conditions, education on appropriate use of prescribed medications, or referral to available community resources as needed.
  • Transitioning to self-care. The typical program is three one-hour visits per week for up to 12 weeks. Your Cardiac Rehabilitation Specialist will work with you to maximize your progress in the program and to ensure continuity of the exercise program as you transition to your maintenance program at home.
  • Cardiac Rehabilitation is covered by Medicare and most insurances. If you are seeing a cardiologist for one of the cardiac conditions listed, or have cardiovascular disease, please ask your physician about a referral to Mount Sinai Medical Center’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program located at 4300 Alton Road, 1st Floor of the Greenspan Building on the Miami Beach Campus.
