Hip and Knee
Many
patients facing hip or knee surgery are concerned about what their lives will be
like post-surgery. Will they be able to function normally? At Mount Sinai, our
commitment to minimally invasive techniques for surgeries on these joints has
yielded excellent results.
Two
common hip surgeries are hip replacements – most often needed by people with
osteoarthritis – and surgery for fractured hips. Surgeons at Mount Sinai have
pioneered minimally invasive techniques and instrumentation for both types of
surgery, which involve much smaller incisions and dramatically reduced
recuperation periods. In both cases, the techniques minimize the amount of
muscle cut and preserve the normal tissue as much as possible.
The
knee is the largest and one of the most easily injured joints, and knee problems
are the most common reason for visiting orthopaedic surgeons. At Mount Sinai,
knee surgery – both replacement and repair – is typically done using minimally
invasive techniques. Surgeons at Mount Sinai perform two types of minimally
invasive knee replacement surgeries designed to preserve as many of the natural
structures as possible. Arthroscopic techniques are used for a variety of knee
repair surgeries.
