Neonatology Program Overview

For more than 25 years, parents of infants who need specialized medical care have trusted Mount Sinai Medical Center’s Abess Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) to take care of their babies. If your child is one of the 10% of newborns who require advanced medical care in the NICU, you can take comfort knowing your baby will be in the capable, compassionate care of Mount Sinai’s expert neonatologists, who have more than 66 years of combined experience.

As a Level III NICU, Mount Sinai’s team of specialists can care for babies born as early as 23 weeks and can address nearly any condition or complication that may arise. In addition to their experience, the doctors and nurses at Mount Sinai’s 16-bed Abess NICU apply the most up-to-date research, utilize advanced technology, and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of fellow caregivers to deliver specialized care for your baby. Our team includes respiratory therapists, neonatal rehabilitation specialists, social workers, lactation consultants, and more.

In addition, the team at Mount Sinai understands the unique stress families face when their newborn has to stay in the NICU. With this in mind, we created a supportive atmosphere that gives you open access to your baby’s providers, constant updates about your baby’s condition, and resources to help your family during this challenging time.

Even after your baby leaves the NICU, the Mount Sinai team will continue to provide support and follow-up care through your child’s first year. We track weight gain, record developmental milestones, and monitor for early warning signs of problems that pediatricians unfamiliar with intensive neonatal care may not recognize, in the Developmental Follow-Up program. The Mount Sinai NICU team also provides you with helpful resources so you can feel comfortable and supported as you transition to caring for your baby at home. From educational programs to specialized therapies, you will have the tools to help your baby grow and develop in safety and good health.
