Here, our expertly trained physicians use catheter-based procedures to treat diseases and conditions that occur within the actual structure of the heart: the muscle, its chambers, and its valves. From birth defects to overly stiff or leaky valves, Mount Sinai’s Structural Heart Program delivers specialized care from a multidisciplinary team of physicians representing interventional cardiology, cardiac imaging, general/medical cardiology, adult congenital cardiology, and cardiothoracic surgery.

As an academic program affiliated with Columbia University, our faculty are among a pioneering group of medical researchers finding new techniques and testing new approaches to treat structural heart problems. As a result, patients can participate in novel clinical trials, such as the Edwards Heart Failure Trial for patients with mitral and tricuspid valve disease. In addition, Mount Sinai’s Structural Heart Program offers specialized care for complex conditions, including congenital heart defects among adults. In these cases, patients may have been treated as children, and their initial repair has failed. Or, in some cases, adult patients come to Mount Sinai with congenital defects that were never diagnosed until adulthood.

As a result, our region has many patients with advanced structural heart disease, often exacerbated by late diagnoses or a lack of treatment options in their home countries. Making matters worse, these populations have higher rates of diabetes and hypertension, which can worsen existing structural heart defects.

In addition to the region’s higher-than-average percentage of foreign-born residents, South Florida also has a large population of older adults.
