The medical center is the only South Florida hospital named to the list MIAMI BEACH, FL – Mar. 6, 2019 – For the second year in a row, Mount Sinai Medical Center has been chosen as one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals® by IBM Watson Health™. Mount Sinai was recognized in the major teaching hospital category, and was the only hospital in South Florida to be named to the list. Based on results culled from an annual study of publicly available clinical, operational and patient satisfaction metrics, this recognition positions Mount Sinai among the top-performing hospitals in the U.S. The study, conducted every year since 1993, uses independent and objective research to gauge hospital performance records. IBM Watson Health’s researchers gathered data from 3,156 short-term, acute care, non-federal U.S. hospitals, including Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MEDPAR) figures and core measures and patient satisfaction data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare website. The award comes on the heels of Mount Sinai entering a new era of patient care with the opening of the seven-story Skolnick Surgical Tower and 34,000-square-foot Hildebrandt Emergency Center on Miami Beach just last month. The state-of-the-art facilities combine highly advanced diagnostic technologies and treatments with a tranquil and healing environment, designed to enhance the patient, caregiver and visitor experience. “We are consistently striving to provide the highest-quality healthcare to our community,” said Steven D. • 9 percent higher patient survival rates
• 7 percent fewer patient complications and 19.3 percent fewer healthcare-associated infections
• Shorter patient lengths-of-stay (by one half-day), adjusted for median severity
• Median emergency department wait times that were 17.3 minutes shorter
• Average inpatient costs per discharge that were 11.9 percent lower (a difference of $830 per discharge)
• A median operating profit margin that was 11.9 percentage points higher
• An overall hospital experience rated three percent higher, as measured by the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS)
