Vascular & Interventional Radiology Program Overview
At Mount Sinai Medical Center, our expert team of interventional radiologists and vascular specialists uses advanced imaging that gives us a view inside the human body to treat a variety of conditions with minimally invasive procedures.
What Is Interventional Radiology?
A relatively new medical specialty, interventional radiology uses technology to access organs and blood vessels inside the body, often with thin wires, tubes, and tiny cameras, to perform procedures for everything from cardiovascular disease to cancer. And because many of these procedures use blood vessels as pathways to reach a problem area, vascular specialists may be necessary.
Interventional radiology procedures are considered “minimally invasive,” and they often cause less pain and require shorter recovery times. In fact, we perform most procedures on an outpatient basis and generally use either a local anesthetic or a mild sedative.
Our Approach
At Mount Sinai, we use the most innovative technology, the most advanced equipment, and the latest techniques to offer patients the most leading-edge care possible, always focused on your well-being. In addition, we have assembled a multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, and technologists to ensure we deliver unparalleled results.
Education and Research
In 1969, Mount Sinai established a Radiology Residency Program, one of the first radiology training programs in the nation, and today, more than 220 of our resident graduates practice around the world. As a teaching hospital, we take great pride in training the next generation of physicians.
Our team of interventional radiology physicians and researchers has a long history of advancing the field of minimally invasive procedures and technology. We are actively involved in research studies, and our team lectures around the world at national and international meetings about the most advanced minimally invasive, image-guided therapies. In addition, our physicians regularly host training programs for visiting physicians from around the world to teach them the most state-of-the-art treatments. As pioneers in minimally invasive treatments, our physicians have developed new, more efficient techniques, which have been published in medical journals and lectured about around the globe.
