Free Sun Protection: Mount Sinai’s Birthday Gift to the Miami Beach Community

— Miami Beach Becomes First City in U.S. to Offer its Sunscreen at Public Dispensers, Free of Charge —

(Miami Beach, FL – March 18, 2015) – The City of Miami Beach is celebrating its 100th birthday this year. In honor of the centennial celebration, Mount Sinai Medical Center has gifted the installation of 50 free sunscreen dispensers throughout the city for public use.

The sunscreen dispensers will be placed at public pools, parks and various beach access points near lifeguard stands for all who visit Miami Beach to use, free of charge. Supporting sponsor, Destination Brands International, developed the official and exclusive sun care product line of Miami Beach – MB Miami Beach Suncare – which will be available in the dispensers.

“As we celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the City of Miami Beach, Mount Sinai Medical Center is proud to be an institution within Miami Beach for over 65 years,” said Steve Sonenreich, Mount Sinai President and CEO. “We are pleased to offer these free sunscreen dispensers as part of our commitment to improving the health and well-being of our community and its visitors.”

According to the American Cancer Society, skin cancer is the most common of all cancers. It accounts for nearly half of all cancers in the United States. More than 3.5 million cases of basal and squamous cell skin cancer are diagnosed in this country each year. Melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, will account for more than 73,000 cases of skin cancer in 2015.

“As the fun and sun capital of the world, people engage in the many outdoor activities available from relaxing at the beach to playing on our courts and doing so unprotected can lead to sunburns, which is a major cause of skin cancer,” said Miami Beach City Manager Jimmy Morales. “Public safety is priority and we’re offering this amenity because we care.”

The “Sunshine State” is second behind California in incidences of melanoma, and things are only getting worse, according to Jose Lutzky, M.D., Director of Mount Sinai’s Melanoma Program “Unfortunately, our numbers are growing,” he said. “That is really something we do not want to be first in.”

The sunscreen being provided in the dispensers is none other than MB Miami Beach Triple Action Sea Kelp Sunscreen Lotion. The light, non-greasy, quick absorbing lotion is SPF 30, broad spectrum to protect from both UVA and UVB rays and water-resistant for up to 80 minutes. The sea kelp offers unique benefits of helping to restore proteins and minerals lost in the sun, firming the appearance of the skin and helping to protect against photo-aging with its natural sunscreen properties.

As the city celebrates its centennial, this could not be a better time to offer a gift of skin protection and awareness to the millions who enjoy this top global destination each year.
