Structural Heart Program Overview
A testament to its status as South Florida’s premier cardiovascular program, Mount Sinai Medical Center offers patients access to one of the most experienced, multidisciplinary Structural Heart programs in the region. Here, our expertly trained physicians use catheter-based procedures to treat diseases and conditions that occur within the actual structure of the heart: the muscle, its chambers, and its valves. From birth defects to overly stiff or leaky valves, Mount Sinai’s Structural Heart Program delivers specialized care from a multidisciplinary team of physicians representing interventional cardiology, cardiac imaging, general/medical cardiology, adult congenital cardiology, and cardiothoracic surgery.
As an academic program affiliated with Columbia University, our faculty are among a pioneering group of medical researchers finding new techniques and testing new approaches to treat structural heart problems. As a result, patients can participate in novel clinical trials, such as the Edwards Heart Failure Trial for patients with mitral and tricuspid valve disease. In addition, Mount Sinai’s Structural Heart Program offers specialized care for complex conditions, including congenital heart defects among adults. In these cases, patients may have been treated as children, and their initial repair has failed. Or, in some cases, adult patients come to Mount Sinai with congenital defects that were never diagnosed until adulthood.
The physicians who comprise Mount Sinai’s Structural Heart Program trained at some of the most prestigious medical centers in the world, including the program’s director, Dr. Nirat Beohar, who trained at Northwestern Medical Center, one of the nation’s premier structural heart programs. With their advanced training and decades of experience, our physicians can treat patients who might not otherwise have options. For this reason, patients often come to Mount Sinai for second opinions when all hope appears lost. As a testament to our work, Mount Sinai does the most interventional cardiac procedures in South Florida.
A Unique Program for a Unique Region
Perhaps the most diverse region in the U.S., South Florida is home to millions of residents from Latin America and the Caribbean, where advanced cardiovascular care may be hard to access. As a result, our region has many patients with advanced structural heart disease, often exacerbated by late diagnoses or a lack of treatment options in their home countries. Making matters worse, these populations have higher rates of diabetes and hypertension, which can worsen existing structural heart defects.
In addition to the region’s higher-than-average percentage of foreign-born residents, South Florida also has a large population of older adults. And, since structural heart problems often occur later in life, our region has a greater need for specialized, structural heart care. Fortunately, Mount Sinai’s Structural Heart Program offers peace of mind and advanced treatment options for all South Floridians, regardless of their age or place of birth.
