In combination, gynecologic cancers are the third most commonly diagnosed types of cancers in the United States. As a result, researchers have committed tremendous resources to making historic advancements in preventing, detecting, and treating gynecologic disorders and diseases. In fact, widespread use of the Pap test to detect cervical cancer has exponentially reduced the incidence of this malignancy, which was once common among American women. More recently, the introduction of HPV vaccines, which target the virus that causes the majority of cervical cancers, has been hailed as one of the most significant public health advancements in the last five decades. Through years of research and effort, we have gained valuable knowledge to treat deadly gynecologic cancers with powerful medicines, targeted radiation treatments, and effective surgeries using leading-edge robotic technology, including minimally invasive procedures. Despite these advances, millions of women throughout the world continue to be affected by gynecologic cancers, including the most common type, uterine or endometrial cancer, as well as cervical and ovarian cancer. Director of Gynecologic Oncology Dr. Brian Slomovitz is a national and global leader in clinical research. He serves as a board member of the GOG Foundation, the leading national organization for investigating advances in the detection and treatment of gynecologic cancers. Due to the prestige and research focus he brings to the Mount Sinai program, female patients seeking care for gynecologic cancer may be able to participate in pioneering clinical trials testing the most sophisticated therapies that may not be available at most medical centers. Dr. Slomovitz leads all of the GOG Foundation’s endometrial cancer clinical trials and is at the front lines of improving progression-free survival for patients. Most recently, Dr. Slomovitz’s success in treating endometrial (uterine) cancer with immunotherapy improved overall survival rates for women with a particular genetic makeup. Through clinical trials such as these, Dr. Brian Slomovitz is changing the standard of care for women with advanced or recurrent endometrial cancer.
