    Dr. Bastos earned his medical degree from Universidade Federal da Bahia in Salvador, Brazil. He then completed his internal medicine residency and hematology/oncology fellowship at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. During his training at the University of Miami, Dr. Bastos received the Student Inpatient Teaching Award and first-place prize in the Annual Case Presentation Competition as part of the internal medicine residency program.     Before joining Mount Sinai, Dr. Bastos practiced as a hematologist/oncologist at Baptist Health, focusing on genitourinary malignancies. He also served as a hematologist/oncologist for the Department of Hematology/Oncology and Program Director of the Cancer Research Fellowship Program at the Cleveland Clinic in Weston, FL. Additionally, Dr. Bastos was appointed to the Florida Center for Brain Tumor Research’s Scientific Advisory Council by Rick Scott (former Florida governor). He also received a research grant to minimize disparities associated with enrollment in clinical trials. Additionally, Dr. Bastos has been recognized as a Top Oncologist in America for the treatment of prostate cancer by Newsweek magazine.

    Dr. Bastos is committed to providing personalized patient care, utilizing cutting-edge technologies and treatment options. He is actively involved in the community, having previously served as a lead speaker, fundraiser, and organizer on behalf of the MCI/Baptist Health Foundation. Dr. Bastos has contributed to teaching, research, publications, and national/regional presentations on various hematology/oncology topics, including targeted/immunotherapies in lung cancer, treatments for oligo-metastatic prostate cancer, genitourinary cancer, immunotherapy in head and neck cancer, muscle-invasive bladder cancer, chemotherapy for metastatic brain tumors, and treatments for advanced renal cell carcinoma. He has also led numerous clinical research trials on topics such as tumor-agnostic precision immuno-oncology, somatic targeting, advanced or metastatic solid tumors, and muscle-invasive urothelial carcinoma of the bladder.

    Dr. Bastos has a passion for teaching and education. He is actively involved in the ASCO Volunteer Corps Mentorship Program and has mentored early-career oncologists. Additionally, Dr. Bastos serves on the governance of the ABIM Board of Hematology as an itemized writer/board member.

    Dr. Bastos is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Hematology, the American College of Physicians, the American Medical Society, the National Hispanic Health Foundation, the European Society of Medical Oncology, the Japanese Society of Clinical Oncology, the Society for Neuro-Oncology, the Florida Society of Clinical Oncology, and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer.

    Dr. Bastos is fluent in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.
