Irma and Norman Braman Comprehensive Cancer Center Construction Update | 2024

President’s Message
November 2024

To our residents, fellows and graduates,

As the year comes to a close, we’d like to take the time to provide updates on our journey towards the completion of the new Irma and Norman Braman Comprehensive Cancer Center.

As the next generation of physicians, we know you share our aspirations of progress, innovation, and personalized health care. We’re excited to show you what that vision looks like in practice at Mount Sinai.

The opening of the Sidman Family Parking Garage, completed in January of 2024, allowed for the reallocation of our employee parking and cleared the space for the construction of the new cancer center. The parking garage, which is 330,000 square feet, has altered the landscape of our Miami Beach campus, as well as the landscape of the Miami Beach skyline.

In April, site prep and the elevation of the site, which boasts a breathtaking view of Biscayne Bay, was completed. By the beginning of April 2024, the retaining wall and the foundations were completed as well.

This summer, our diligent construction teams completed the Florida Power and Light lines, bringing temporary and ultimately, permanent power to the site. Alongside this accomplishment, the teams began construction on the vertical elements, completing the main elevator shaft for this groundbreaking new facility. The floor slabs for the first and second floor are complete, with the third to be complete by the end of the year.

Looking ahead to 2025, we look forward to celebrating a major milestone: the official ‘Topping Out’ of the building in January, when we expect to have the concrete structure completed. By the end of April of next year, the temporary roof dry-in, temporary power for elevator operations, and the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing in-wall rough framing will be complete.

With the project scheduled for completion in early 2026, the new cancer center will allow our physicians to deliver care in a completely patient centric, high-touch, high-tech environment.

As cancer incidences continue to rise, we are determined to meet growing the needs of South Florida.  The new building will allow for greater access to prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship services, all in one location.

Lead by Dr. Steven Hochwald, the Director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center and Chief of Surgical Oncology, the new building will house our specialized team of physicians and surgeons, who will be supported by the newest technologies and equipment. In addition, we continue to focus on our physician recruitment efforts, in preparation for the opening, which aims to enhance the already robust expertise of our medical staff.

With a focus on complete and holistic support, patients and their families will have access to a suite of support services, a designated care team, and a patient-centric spa and appearance center, meditation sessions, massages, and more.

In addition to these offerings, the Irma and Norman Braman Comprehensive Cancer Center will feature:

  • Rad Center for Precision Medicine and Center for Cancer Genetics
  • Infusion bays overlooking the Miami skyline
  • A comprehensive Breast Center offering mammography, ultrasounds, and dedicated biopsy and exam rooms
  • 20,000 ft. of space dedicated to our radiation oncology department, which will house the newest technologies

These elements, alongside our affiliation with Columbia University in New York, give our patients increased access to clinical trials and research, and more innovation in prevention, detection, therapy, and survivorship.

With the completion of this significant project on the horizon, we look forward to beginning this new chapter of personalized cancer care for South Florida.

I hope you enjoy reading more news and updates in this newsletter.

Sincerely,

Gino Santorio
