Dr. Safdie earned his medical degree from the University of Buenos Aires, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude. In 2007, he enrolled at the School of Gerontology at the University of Southern California and subsequently completed post-doctoral training in basic, translational and clinical research. He completed his surgical internship at Mount Sinai Medical Center and his general surgery residency at the Cleveland Clinic Florida. During his time at Cleveland Clinic Florida, he served as Chief Resident, was named Senior Surgery Resident of the Year and received the Outstanding Performance in Surgical Research award.

Dr. Fernando Safdie completed his cardiothoracic fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh.
He specialized in all aspects of cardiothoracic diseases with a focus on benign and malignant processes affecting the lungs, mediastinum and esophagus. He spent his last year as a clinical instructor with a focus on minimally invasive and robotic surgical techniques which minimize tissue trauma and facilitate patient’s recovery. While in Pittsburgh, he was recognized with the STAR award by the Veterans Affair hospital system.

Dr. Safdie is a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He is also a Fellow of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and a member of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Safdie has authored and co-authored numerous papers and his research has led to a clinical trial researching the role of dietary modifications as a mechanism to decrease the side effects of chemotherapy in cancer patients. He also serves as a reviewer for the American Journal of Clinical Oncology and has authored multiple book chapters.

Dr. Safdie is fluent in both Italian and Spanish.
