Dr. Kfir Ben-David is Mount Sinai’s chairman of the Department of Surgery and the program director for the general surgery residency. An expert in gastrointestinal surgery, Dr. Ben-David specializes in the minimally invasive and robotic surgical treatment of various conditions such as esophageal, gastric and pancreatic cancer; gastroesophageal reflux; achalasia, paraesophageal and complex hiatal hernias. He also oversees the weight loss surgical program at Mount Sinai Medical Center.

Board certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Ben-David has performed more than 500 minimally invasive esophagectomies – the most ever performed in Florida. His extensive experience in this procedure has led to him teaching more than 100 surgeons throughout the world who seek his expertise in perfecting their technique. In addition to his expertise in minimally invasive complex gastrointestinal surgery, Dr. Ben-David has also performed more than 1,000 minimally invasive and robotic bariatric procedures since 2006. He has also performed many robotic gastric and pancreatic surgeries that most surgeons can only do open.

    Dr. Kfir Ben-David is Mount Sinai’s chairman of the Department of Surgery and the program director for the general surgery residency.     Dr. Ben-David is an active researcher in the area of gastrointestinal surgery, esophageal, gastric, pancreatic and bariatric care. He has published over 75 peer-reviewed manuscripts, 15 book chapters, and has received funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as a co-investigator on an RO1 research grant, the original grant issued by the NIH. He serves on the editorial board of two well-respected surgical journals and has been invited all over the country and world to lecture on his surgical experience.

    Dr. Ben-David earned his medical degree in 2001 at the University of Florida (UF) College of Medicine. He completed his general surgery residency in 2006 at the University of Cincinnati’s Department of Surgery, where he was also chief resident. Dr. Ben-David also completed an advanced minimally invasive gastrointestinal surgery fellowship in 2007 at Duke University in North Carolina.

    Prior to joining Mount Sinai, Dr. Ben-David was a respected member of the faculty at the University Of Florida College Of Medicine, where he was a tenured associate professor of surgery. He also served as chief of the minimally invasive gastroesophageal and bariatric service and director of the minimally invasive surgery fellowship and general surgery residency programs. He is currently a Clinical Professor of Surgery at Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine.

    Dr. Ben-David has earned various awards and honors of merit because of his dedication to training future physicians and specialists in an academic setting. He has received the University of Florida Physician Service Key Award three times, the University of Florida’s College of Medicine Exemplary Teacher Award and the Dragstedt Outstanding Department of Surgery Teaching Faculty Award multiple times.
