Surgical Pathology

Description

The Arkadi M. Rywlin, MD Department of Pathology at Mount Sinai Medical Center offers a one year surgical pathology fellowship program which emphasizes Breast and GI pathology, along with the highly diverse range of general surgical pathology specimens expected to be encountered in both tertiary-care and community hospital settings. The unique demographics of South Florida as well as the department’s national and international pathology consultation service provides a gamut of common and uncommon diseases for diagnostic review. With nearly 19,000 surgical specimens processed annually, glass slide consults and non-gynecologic cytology specimens, the strength of the fellowship program is derived not only from the wealth of material but also from a staff of highly-trained pathologists whose diagnostic acumen is complemented by an enthusiasm to teach.

Affiliation with consulting pathologists in virtually every pathology sub-specialty renders an invaluable array of knowledge to the department’s impressive resource of combined experience. Opportunities for the fellow to perform at an advanced and independent level in sign-out and frozen section diagnosis are available and fostered with an appropriate level of attending guidance. Individual interests are accommodated while maintaining a focus on creating a balanced and well-rounded experience.

The fellow assumes primary responsibility for diagnosing and reporting all of the outside consultation material. The fellow participates in and is responsible for a variety of clinico-pathologic conferences allowing for excellent clinical interactions and review of essentially all organ system pathology. All consultation sign outs and conferences are conducted with attending supervision. Of note is a well-established Pathology/Radiology Correlation Breast Conference that helps integrate the benefits of an evidence-based approach to patient medical care with current concepts of breast pathology. Teaching of residents, rotating clinical residents and medical students is another learning opportunity. The Department serves as the Pathology Department for the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine at Florida International University and extensive teaching experience is gained there. A strong interest in research and publication is engendered within the fellowship program and is supported by full sponsorship to conferences in which accepted works are presented. The hospital’s spectacular location adjacent to the waters of Biscayne Bay in Miami Beach enhances an unrivaled lifestyle throughout the year.
