Statement from the Program Director

Thank you for your interest in our Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program. Mount Sinai Medical Center is the largest private, independent, non-profit teaching hospital in South Florida. Our program is an affiliated teaching site for the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and the Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. Our 672 bed hospital provides care to a large local patient population; however, due to its South Florida location, Mount Sinai also serves as a referral center to international patients from the Caribbean and Central and South America.

The Interventional Cardiology Fellowship is a one-year ACGME approved program, in addition to following the guidelines and recommendations of the American College of Cardiology (COCATS). We provide training in clinical interventional cardiology where fellows master the skills of percutaneous coronary interventional procedures and gain exposure to a wide variety of structural heart disease percutaneous procedures. The program is directed by faculty members in the Division of Cardiology; attending have faculty appointments with Columbia University Medical Center in New York. Fellows are an essential part of the division and our faculty is firmly committed to training the academic leaders of tomorrow. Goal and Mission

The goal of the Mount Sinai Medical Center Interventional Cardiology Training Program is to provide the highest quality training in the field of Interventional Cardiology. Trainees will develop and demonstrate competence in the clinical knowledge, procedural skills, clinical judgment, professionalism, and interpersonal skills required as a specialist in Interventional Cardiology. At the completion of the training program, the trainee will have acquired the competency to pass the appropriate specialty boards required to practice independently as a specialist in the field.

Trainees planning to do coronary or other cardiovascular interventional procedures must also have knowledge of the indications, limitations and complications of these procedures as well as an in-depth understanding of the specialized equipment needs. In addition to basic training in coronary angioplasty, trainees must obtain specialized experience in the performance of specific interventional therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

Objectives

Fellows receive training and supervised experience in the evaluation and management of a patients with a wide variety of acute and chronic cardiovascular conditions, including patients with the following cardiac conditions: Coronary Artery Disease, Valvular Heart Disease, Cardiomyopathy, Pericardial Disease, Peripheral Artery Disease, Adult Congenital Heart Disease, and  Aortic Disease.

Program Organization

This one-year program complies with all ACGME requirements, in addition to following the guidelines and recommendations of the American College of Cardiology (COCATS). At the end of the training period, fellows will be equipped with the knowledge, skills and abilities to meet the requirements for certification in interventional cardiovascular diseases, as determined by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Required Documents for Application

The following supporting documents should be submitted via the ERAS program:

• ERAS Application
• Official Medical School Transcript
• USMLE Transcripts (at least Steps 1&2) and, if applicable, ECFMG status report
• Personal Statement
• Three (3) letters of recommendation, including one from your Cardiovascular fellowship program director.

Information for applicants on a Visa:

• J-1 Visas will be sponsored for applicants who are accepted into the program. Foreign medical graduates will need to have completed an ACGME-approved residency program in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship in the United States prior to beginning our program. We are not able to sponsor or accept H-1 or O-1 visas. We will not convert H visas to J visas for individual candidates.
• Your visa status must be certain at the time of application.

Interview Process

Upon receipt of the completed application, our selection committee will review all materials. Invitations for interviews will be offered via e-mail from Jessica Alvarado, Fellowship Coordinator.
