The OB/GYN residency training program at Mount Sinai is designed to provide physician trainees the opportunity to achieve the knowledge, skills and abilities essential to the practice of obstetrics and gynecology. Residents will also develop competence in the profession of ambulatory primary health care for women. The residency program will establish pertinent management programs in preventive health, health promotion and ambulatory services for women (primary care). The clinical hospitals serve a wide referral area geographically and from all socioeconomic groups. We provide the highest level of maternal and gynecological care. Beyond the inpatient clinical experiences, the obstetrics/gynecology residents will receive experience in the Miami Beach Health Center. Graduates of this program will be further trained to manage and supervise ambulatory primary care for women. They will also be prepared to take the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology Examination.

The OB/GYN residency program consists of the following components as outlined by the program requirements for education developed by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) and Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for obstetrics and gynecology. Residents are assigned to these components in an educationally appropriate sequence over 48 months of training.
In coordination with the program director and the GME coordinator, there will be an orientation for the PGY1 residents with all program residents in June of each year. This orientation includes recommendations to read the program manual and policies; a synopsis of the ACGME requirements, milestones expected per year, the ABOG updates about eligibility requirements, a discussion about evaluation systems, mentorship, and other topics.
The PGY1 year begins with the introductory courses in order to familiarize residents with the specialty, clinical settings and levels of care. Residents are introduced to the clinical management of common scenarios in obstetrics/gynecology, management of common medical diagnosis, how to document medical records, common community resources relevant for patient care and approaches to medical student teaching.
The PGY 2-4 residents will be more prepared for increasing responsibilities and will have more advanced clinical skills, knowledge and will teach and supervise PGY1s during didactic conferences, patient care examinations, and presentations.
There will be education time during all clinical rotations. Patient rounds, post-operative and post-procedure debriefings, daily and rotation handoffs will include education as key parts of discussion for all residents. These are run by all faculty and senior residents and occur throughout the residency in all training sessions.
Direct teaching and modeling of leadership is expected of the residents. All residents have gradual and increasing supervisory experiences in oversight of medical students and advanced licensed providers.
As per the ABOG, “all residents will be expected to engage in projects in which they develop hypotheses or in projects of substantive scholarly exploration and analysis that require critical thinking. Areas in which scholarly activity may be pursued include, but are not limited to: basic, clinical or translational biomedicine; health services; quality improvement; bioethics; education; and public policy.” Traditional clinical or basic research or other scholarly activities within obstetrics/gynecology and other departments are facilitated by the mentors. There is an excellent opportunity at Mount Sinai Medical Center to collaborate with our other education programs.
Quality and safety projects and the system of medicine in obstetrics and gynecology are included in the administrative education of the curriculum. This includes experience in colleague scheduling and the administrative working of the clinical OB/GYN service such as assessment of equipment, maintenance of quality in the OB/GYN patient care areas, and services that provide important aspects of care in the hospital such as hospital laboratory, pharmacy, etc.

Three positions are offered at Mount Sinai Medical Center’s Obstetrics and Gynecology residency program each year. We are an ACGME accredited four year program.
Mount Sinai Medical Center participates and accepts applications only throughResidencyCAS. In addition, your application will only be considered if you are enrolled in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
