Patient Story: Álvaro

A patient embarks on a medical journey from Guatemala to undergo a life-altering cardiovascular operation at Mount Sinai’s Aortic Center.

At the Aortic Center at Mount Sinai, a diverse array of patients come from across the globe seeking transformative cardiovascular care. Among them is Álvaro, a 41-year-old husband and father of three, who traveled from Guatemala to confront a connective tissue disease affecting his heart.

Álvaro’s ties to South Florida extend beyond his medical journey, as his younger brother currently resides in the city. It was through his sister-in-law that he discovered Dr. Irman Forghani, the Director of Genetics at Mount Sinai Medical Center. This discovery prompted Álvaro to schedule an appointment to determine the complexities of his condition. While also under the care of Dr. Steve Xydas, the Chief of the Columbia University Division of Cardiac Surgery at the Mount Sinai Heart Institute, Álvaro’s heart concerns were both diagnosed and resolved.

“Dr. Forghani found certain things that alarmed her, and she took action immediately,” Álvaro says. “I am very grateful because otherwise, something else that would’ve been recommended to me wouldn’t have been a good fit.”

At Mount Sinai’s Aortic Center, the team adopts a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to tackle genetic diseases. In cases such as these, the genetics team works closely with the cardiovascular and aortic teams to create an integrative strategy for addressing rare disorders. Additionally, cardiologists also collaborate in monthly cardiogenetic conferences to thoroughly discuss each patient’s condition from various perspectives and determine appropriate treatment options. Álvaro, especially, was impressed by this level of expertise.

“With Dr. Xydas, he gained my confidence since the first appointment,” he adds. “Everybody here has been really nice. They have helped a lot with my recovery. On the day of the surgery, when I woke up I was feeling terrible but in just four days, I became a different person. Everyone is here with a smile to help.”

Distinguished as the sole aortic center in South Florida, Mount Sinai Medical Center is dedicated to maintaining healthy hearts, enhancing longevity, and delivering personalized care that encompasses all facets of a patient’s well-being. Álvaro’s story serves as an example of the Aortic Center’s commitment to cardiac care, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of patients who entrust them with their hearts.
