Physician Spotlight: Dr. Nicholas Smith

Dr. Nicholas Smith is a Urologist and Assistant Professor at the Columbia University Division of Urology at Mount Sinai Medical Center.

Dr. Smith often encounters men with severely enlarged and obstructive prostates that have caused them to develop kidney failure/injury, bladder injury, as well as inability to urinate.  Depending on their overall clinical picture, often the best option for them is a procedure called Holmium Laser Enucleation of Prostate (HoLEP).

Dr. Smith is one of few urologists in Florida who performs this minimally invasive procedure, which can effectively treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)—enlarged prostates of any size.  The overall impact of this procedure is the restoration and protection of urinary and kidney function by permitting the body to excrete urine effectively.

After the procedure, patients (who have not urinated on their own in years) recover full urinary function and experience an improvement in kidney function, that may ultimately save them from requiring a dialysis or renal transplantation.
