Mount Sinai continues The DAISY Awards to celebrate excellent nurses.
Since debuting at Mount Sinai in March, a total of six Mount Sinai Medical Center nurses have been honored with a DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses for their achievements and dedication to treating, comforting, and assisting patients. Since 1999, The DAISY Award has recognized nurses for the powerful work they undertake every day in clinical care.
The family of J. Patrick Barnes founded DAISY in 1999. The acronym name stands for Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem and serves as a tribute to Patrick’s struggle with Immune Thrombocytopenia (ITP). With more than 2.5 million amazing nomination stories submitted, over 5,400 hospitals and nursing schools in 33 countries have recognized over 189,000 nurses.
Each month, Mount Sinai collects nominations from patients, families, and colleagues to salute a nurse’s accomplishments. Recent Mount Sinai DAISY Award recipients include Erin Kinney, Antonia Peterkin, and Yania Dominguez. Kinney is a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurse who was acknowledged for her efforts while caring for a baby born with congenital complications. Peterkin offered sympathy and assistance to both a patient and his wife, while Dominguez was praised for preparing a patient for her first surgical procedure. Because of their dedication, compassion, and expert care in carrying out the Mount Sinai mission, these three women have further supported and inspired the Miami-Dade community.
In keeping with the goals of The DAISY Foundation, Mount Sinai wants to continue thanking nurses for the extraordinary care they give to each patient. By commemorating these nurses, Mount Sinai and DAISY reinforce the importance of compassion in healthcare and encourage other nurses and healthcare workers to do the same. The Mount Sinai team welcomes patients, family members, physicians, and other staff to continue nominating nurses who have shown remarkable empathy and love in such a challenging but rewarding field.
